Yoga Girls Club Making A Difference
One of the girls asked to read a page from Strong Is The New Pretty by Kate. T Parker .
We read from this each Yoga Girls session.
Each week this book sparks such great conversations about hope, being themselves, possibility ,confidence, strength, friendships, facing adversity, being brave and more.
One girl shared that she was kicked out of her group of friends and how deeply it hurt. She was in tears as she described the events and said "it really still hurts and I got help from my mom and teachers but as you see, I'm crying. I felt so alone" Another girl shared that she gets made fun of for her looks and her hair even the car her parents drive. She and I talked and I told her she is beautiful, she is one of the funniest kids I've met....I can see her as a comedian some day. She needed that so much. As we worked on our affirmation bracelets she had originally chosen the word HELP as her affirmation word. I tried to steer her toward a more positive word but she said no, this is the word I need. I understood and and helped her find her letters. We talked and shared throughout the project and as everyone shared she seemed lighter. At the end of our project time I saw she changed her word from Help to Hope.
Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience: Depression and anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy. These issues may persist into adulthood.
